[NEWS UPDATE] – OE2VEL got in touch to say that due to the noise situation on site they have decided to change to M/2 category instead of M/S for the CQWW CW contest. Picture below is of the QTH:

We have updated our webpage with the propagation predictions based on our actual antenna setup at Bouvet. This work has been performed in close cooperation with world leading expert Stu K6TU. See here

The key to getting realistic predictions that map to the real world is antenna modelling. Stu has done tremendous background work and research during last year where he has worked several hundred of hours by preparing the basis for these predictions. Yes, the terrain at Bouvet is challenging, and the predictions are only predictions and may vary by 1-2 S units in both directions. The Bouvet team has done the predictions ourselves by using the HFTA software and by using our subscription at K6TU website.

On our website is the predicted propagation for a big gun station with good RX – low power or small pistols will have far worse conditions. You still have time to improve your setup, maybe focus on one or two bands and I would think 20+17m is a good choice where we also will run more FT8 and where we more easily can work the small pistols.

Please visit Stu’s K6TU website if you are interested learning more about this topic. For a small annual fee you can subscribe to his services. You would also need to get a copy of the HFTA program which you can download on google for Free. Using these tools will help you as a DXer to work the DXpeditions, and also to improve your own station.

Based on all these predictions we have made the best possible choice we could for our antenna farm. We have increased the height of the yagis to 10m, and we also have brought with us 17-18m inv-V on 40/30m. As you know we have also done engineering calculations to be certain our 10m yagis can withstand the climate at Bouvet. They are all rated for 35 m/s. We also know that even small changes of the antenna location at Bouvet could impact the performance. We have done our work – now let’s see how they will perform in real life!

Nous avons mis à jour notre page Web avec les prédictions de propagation basées sur notre configuration d’antenne actuelle à Bouvet. Ce travail a été réalisé en étroite collaboration avec l’expert mondial Stu K6TU. Voir ICI

La clé pour obtenir des prédictions réalistes qui correspondent au monde réel est la modélisation d’antenne. Stu a fait un énorme travail de fond et de recherche au cours de l’année dernière où il a travaillé plusieurs centaines d’heures en préparant la base de ces prédictions. Oui, le terrain à Bouvet est difficile, et les prédictions ne sont que des prédictions et peuvent varier de 1 à 2 unités S dans les deux sens. L’équipe Bouvet a fait les prédictions nous-mêmes en utilisant le logiciel HFTA et en utilisant notre abonnement sur le site Web K6TU.

Sur notre site Web se trouve la propagation prévue pour une grosse station d’armes à feu avec un bon RX – les pistolets de faible puissance ou de petite taille auront des conditions bien pires. Vous avez encore le temps d’améliorer votre configuration, peut-être vous concentrer sur une ou deux bandes et je pense que 20 + 17m est un bon choix où nous utiliserons également plus de FT8 et où nous pourrons plus facilement travailler les petits pistolets.< /p>

Sur la base de toutes ces prévisions, nous avons fait le meilleur choix possible pour notre parc d’antennes. Nous avons augmenté la hauteur des yagis à 10m, et nous avons également amené avec nous 17-18m inv-V sur 40/30m. Comme vous le savez, nous avons également effectué des calculs d’ingénierie pour être certains que nos yagis de 10 m peuvent résister au climat de Bouvet. Ils sont tous calibrés pour 35 m/s. Nous savons également que même de petits changements de l’emplacement de l’antenne à Bouvet pourraient avoir un impact sur les performances. Nous avons fait notre travail – voyons maintenant comment ils se comporteront dans la vraie vie !

Last week I finally installed an 80/160 quarter-wave sloper, stretching over two adjacent land plots and a bundle of power and optical cables. I have the neighbours’ permission to keep the antenna up till end of March. Both bands tuned very well, but there is a lot of RF in the shack and my ears must be lighting up during the TX. The initial operating results are very discouraging, though. Not only is the RX a problem, which I have expected, it seems that I don’t reach out either and the FT8 reports from nearby Asian stations are in the range of -15 to -20.

I was monitoring my transmissions remotely at home/S53R and on 80m I was barely decodable on a phased verticals array on a hilltop location, while not a beep was heard, or even a trace seen on 160m FT8 just before the 9N sunrise. QRM is plain and simple – out of this world! Nothing new and very little I can do about it. Only with the use of DXE NCC-2 I managed to “extract” a couple of stations on 80m. They were mostly from Asia with just two from EU, bordering Asia as a matter of fact. More tests are needed and the upcoming CQWW CW will be a good reference. Stay tuned.

On the other hand, higher bands (17-6m) are surprisingly good with substantially less QRM. Please note that 60m is not permitted in Nepal.

La semaine dernière, j’ai finalement installé un sloper quart d’onde 80/160, s’étendant sur deux terrains adjacents et un faisceau de câbles électriques et optiques. J’ai la permission des voisins de garder l’antenne jusqu’à fin mars. Les deux groupes se sont très bien accordés, mais il y a beaucoup de RF dans la cabane et mes oreilles doivent s’allumer pendant le TX. Les premiers résultats d’exploitation sont cependant très décourageants. Non seulement le RX est un problème, ce à quoi je m’attendais, mais il semble que je ne contacte pas non plus et les rapports FT8 des stations asiatiques voisines se situent entre -15 et -20.

Je surveillais mes transmissions à distance à la maison/S53R et sur 80 m, j’étais à peine décodable sur un réseau vertical phasé sur une colline, alors qu’aucun bip n’a été entendu, ou même une trace vue sur 160m FT8 juste avant le lever du soleil 9N. QRM est clair et simple – hors de ce monde ! Rien de nouveau et très peu de choses que je peux faire à ce sujet. Ce n’est qu’avec l’utilisation de DXE NCC-2 que j’ai réussi à ‘extraire’ quelques stations sur 80m. Ils venaient pour la plupart d’Asie avec seulement deux de l’UE, bordant l’Asie en fait. D’autres tests sont nécessaires et le prochain CQWW CW sera une bonne référence. Restez à l’écoute.

D’un autre côté, les bandes supérieures (17-6m) sont étonnamment bonnes avec beaucoup moins de QRM. Veuillez noter que 60 m n’est pas autorisé au Népal.

[NEWS UPDATE] Sergey, RX3APM will again be active from the Maldives as 8Q7BB during December 4-17, 2022. Participation in the ARRL 10m contest (December 10-11). Will also QRV on 80-10m, vertical antenna near sea. 

[FEBRUARY 21] Look for Sergey, RX3APM to be active from Kandima, Dhaalu Atoll – Maldives as 8Q7BB until February 26th. Most likely QRV on CW; HF bands. QSL via H/c.

[MISE À JOUR DES NOUVELLES] Sergey, RX3APM sera à nouveau actif depuis les Maldives en tant que 8Q7BB du 4 au 17 décembre , 2022. Participation au contest ARRL 10m (10-11 décembre). Sera également QRV sur 80-10m, antenne verticale près de la mer.
