NEWS RELEASE

A group of Amateur Radio Operators (hams) are organizing a DXpedition to Vanuatu in the South Pacific for two weeks in December 2024 (also covering the ARRL 10 meter contest. Not every DXpedition has to be a trip into the wilderness or to an island in a rubber raft. We have located a top 100 most wanted DX country with commercial airlines service, rental homes, electrical power, a city with 40,000+ population, and lovely beaches from which we can operate.

On the DX Most Wanted Countries, Vanuatu is #100 out of 340 countries. It’s main island is Efate (IOTA OC-035), in the Province of Shefa. Vanuatu’s capital city Port Vila is located on the main island and has a large expat population but no hams. It has commercial air service to Australia, Fiji, Honolulu, and New Zealand.

In this nation of tiny islands and indigenous villages, Port Vila is the exception: a bustling port town with hotels, restaurants and markets to delight visitors and cruise ship passengers. The 150-foot-high Mele Cascades waterfall is the ideal place to refresh yourself in the South Pacific heat. For a glimpse of real Vanuatu culture and traditions, travelers say a trip to Ekasup Village is a must. See Vanuatu video here. 

Operating CW, SSB, RTTY, and FT8 we are expecting to make over 50,000 QSOs over the two week period with over 10,000 during the ARRL 10m Contest on December 14-15, 2024. We have over $50,000 committed for the DXpedition plus a Flex 6700, Yaesu FTDX10, Icom 7300, and a Yaesu FT891. The budget per person is $6,500 and spouses are encouraged to join.

Since we are older hams (average age of 70) we are bringing our wives for them to enjoy sunbathing, snorkeling, scuba diving, sightseeing, and shopping while we operate. We are hoping that they will keep our spirits and energy up with good food and drink. There are numerous You Tube videos on Vanuatu including Dxpeditions made by others. We are currently working on a website – vanuatudxpedition.org – so we can keep everyone advised of the latest news about the DXpedition and post the names of sponsors.

Un groupe d’opérateurs radioamateurs (hams) organise une DXpedition à Vanuatu dans le Pacifique Sud pendant deux semaines en décembre 2024 (couvrant également l’ARRL
Concours de 10 mètres. Toutes les expéditions DX ne doivent pas nécessairement être un voyage dans la nature ou sur une île dans un radeau pneumatique. Nous avons localisé l’un des 100 pays DX les plus recherchés avec un service de compagnies aériennes commerciales,
des maisons de location, de l’électricité, une ville de plus de 40 000 habitants et de belles plages à partir desquelles nous pouvons opérer.

Sur le DX Most Wanted Countries, Vanuatu est #100 sur 340 pays. Son île principale est Efate (IOTA OC-035), dans la province de Shefa. Vanuatu

14-15 2024. Nous avons plus de 50 000 $ engagés pour la DXpedition plus un Flex 6700, Yaesu FTDX10, Icom 7300 et un Yaesu FT891. Le budget par personne est de 6 500 $ et les conjoints sont encouragés à s’y joindre.

Comme nous sommes des Radioamateurs plus âgés (moyenne d’âge de 70 ans), nous amenons nos femmes pour qu’elles profitent du soleil, de la plongée avec tuba, de la plongée sous-marine, du tourisme et du shopping tout en

NEWS UPDATE – The callsign “FT1W” recently appeared on the QRZ.com database. If we read the info below – posted on the official Crozet DXpedition blog – then this callsign may not be quite what it’s supposed to be. FT1W probably comes from FT/W as per the header image.

NOTE: The callsign is not issued yet, and I have requested a special call to commemorate the 60 years of the first transmissions made by Mr. Baudelot, first ham operator on the island in the years 61/62. The callsign will be released only hours before the start of the activity by Paul F6EXV and Jean-Michel F6AJA, i.e. after my arrival on the island. Paul will inform via internet and Twitter, Jean-Michel on his DX bulletin. This will be so to avoid pirate activities. Anything not coming from Paul or Jean-Michel will be mere speculation. Be cautious of the FT4Wxxx that might show up !

NOVEMBER 14

Arrival at Saint-Denis de La Réunion airport is scheduled for Tuesday, November 29. A quarantine for COVID will follow from December 1 to 9 in a hotel in St Denis. Boarding the Marion Dufresne (Le Marduf) is scheduled for December 9, 2022.

SEPTEMBER 15

Dates are now known. The Marion Dufresne will leave Reunion Island on December 8th, with a stopover at Tromelin to resupply the people there, then bound for Crozet. I should get there around Christmas. The ship will return on March 26th 2023 to pick us up, and after stopovers at Kerguelen and Amsterdam, arrival at Reunion on April 16th 2023. Therefore, I will be on Alfred Faure base for a solid 3 months. These dates may vary slightly depending on weather conditions.

I am in close contact with TAAF in order to prepare my arrival in the best possible conditions. Some of the main points under discussion are where the
antennas (HF and QO-100) will be installed, as well as the shack. Obviously, I will not start operating the day after my arrival. I will
need to install the antennas and the station. For that, other people’s help will be required. The weather will have its role to play, as it would be impossible to climb to the roof, erect a
mast under high winds: the base commander will have to give his approval. Starting the operation will not be the top priority of the first day.

14 NOVEMBRE

L’arrivée à l’aéroport de Saint-Denis de La Réunion est prévue le mardi 29 novembre. Une quarantaine pour COVID suivra du 1er au 9 décembre dans un hôtel de Saint Denis. L’embarquement du Marion Dufresne (Le Marduf) est prévu le 9 décembre 2022.

15 SEPTEMBRE

Les dates sont maintenant connues. Le Marion Dufresne quittera La Réunion le 8 décembre, avec une escale à Tromelin pour y ravitailler les gens, puis à destination de Crozet. Je devrais y arriver vers Noël. Le navire reviendra le 26 mars 2023 pour nous récupérer, et après escales à Kerguelen et Amsterdam, arrivée à La Réunion le 16 avril 2023. Je serai donc sur la base Alfred Faure pour 3 mois solides. Ces dates peuvent varier légèrement en fonction des conditions météorologiques.

Je suis en contact étroit avec les TAAF afin de préparer mon arrivée dans les meilleures conditions possibles. Certains des principaux points en discussion sont ceux où le
des antennes (HF et QO-100) seront installées, ainsi que la cabane. Évidemment, je ne commencerai pas à opérer le lendemain de mon arrivée. je vais
besoin d’installer les antennes et la station. Pour cela, l’aide d’autres personnes sera nécessaire. La météo aura son rôle à jouer puisqu’il sera impossible de monter sur le toit, d’ériger un
mât par grand vent : le commandant de la base devra donner son accord. Le démarrage de l’opération ne sera pas la priorité absolue du premier jour.

[NEWS UPDATE] – 3B8M will be active in CQWWCW M/M with 5 stations and 6 operators provided gear and operators arrive OK. We will use K3 radios and SPE amplifiers running 800W field-day style. The team leader is Olof G0CKV and the team this year includes Oliver W6NV, Alan K0AV and Denny KX7M and we are also privileged to have two young contesters, M0SDV and DK6SP joining us. Earlier activity from 3B by team members include 3B8HA SOAB, 3B9HA SOAB and 3B8MU in 2014 and 3B8M in 2019 and 2021 M/M.

Antennas will be verticals with their feet literally in the Indian Ocean. On 160 an 18m vertical will be top-loaded with 4 umbrella wires. On 80 an 18m vertical will be configured as an inverted L. For 40 we will use an 18m pole to support a vertical dipole placed on a very small rock right in the ocean – pray for us please.

For the 20m band two 12m Spiderbeam poles will support an array of two 2-element VDAs. On 15m we will likewise use an array of two 2-element VDAs. On 10m we will probably have a 2-element VDA plus an omni vertical dipole.

HF is great fun and easy as solar activity increases. The low bands however always separates the men from the boys – can be challenging but also greatly rewarding.

Provided we will get our antennas up as planned we will focus on 160 and 80 around our sunset and sunrise, 1431z and 0121z respectively, before the contest weekend, likely on CW but perhaps also on SSB. We are not smart enough, nor do we have the experience to do FT8 and such new-fangled stuff but, who knows, we might well appear there if we can gather the courage.

We are not licensed to do 11m, nor are we going to do SSTV or FAX or Hellschreiber or sparc on any band so please don’t bother to ask. 60m is unfortunately not yet allowed in 3B-land either.

You might however find the 3B8M team going seriously hi-tech on 2.3/10GHz QO-100 kindly assisted and guided by 3B8FA and other local 3B8 satellite expertise. [tnx G0CKV]

Pour la bande de 20 m, deux poteaux Spiderbeam de 12 m prendront en charge un réseau de deux VDA à 2 éléments. Sur 15m, nous utiliserons également un tableau de deux VDA à 2 éléments. Sur 10m, nous aurons probablement un VDA à 2 éléments plus un dipôle omni vertical.

HF est très amusant et facile à mesure que l’activité solaire augmente. Cependant, les bandes basses séparent toujours les hommes des garçons – peuvent être difficiles mais aussi très gratifiantes.

À condition que nous installions nos antennes comme prévu, nous nous concentrerons sur 160 et 80 autour de notre coucher et lever de soleil, 1431z et 0121z respectivement, avant le week-end du concours, probablement en CW mais peut-être aussi en SSB. Nous ne sommes pas assez intelligents, et nous n’avons pas non plus l’expérience pour faire du FT8 et des trucs aussi nouveaux mais, qui sait, nous pourrions bien y apparaître si nous pouvons rassembler le courage.

Nous ne sommes pas autorisés à faire du 11m, et nous n’allons pas non plus faire de SSTV ou FAX ou Hellschreiber ou sparc sur n’importe quel groupe donc s’il vous plaît ne vous embêtez pas à demander. 60m n’est malheureusement pas encore autorisé dans le pays 3B non plus.

Vous pourriez cependant trouver l’équipe 3B8M qui passe sérieusement à la haute technologie sur 2,3/10GHz QO-100 aimablement assistée et guidée par 3B8FA et d’autres experts locaux du satellite 3B8. [tnx G0CKV]

[EARLY REMINDER] Team progressing with preparations as planned. Antennas are Spiderbeam with 12 meter poles for 20/17/15/12/10 meter bands, ZS6BKW for 160-10 meter bands and for low bands they will build different wire antennas on the spot. Radios are FTdx10, FTdx3000 and KX2 with SPE and RMA amps.

Team TY5AF will arrive in the area on Monday 21st of November about noon, and try to get on the air in the same evening. Friends at the Villa Karo centre have helped a lot in local preparations. On the weekend (Nov 26/27), they will participate in the CQWW CW Contest most likely in the multi-single category. Team head back to Finland on Tuesday 29th of November late afternoon.

All QSOs will be uploaded to the LoTW shortly after the trip. Detailed QSL policy can be found on the TY5AF page, which will be published in a few days.

In addition to radio operations, team will meet local authorities and interested organisations and individuals to discuss about potential amateur radio initiatives in Benin.

[AUGUST 31] TY5AF will be on the air between November 22-29, 2022 by Finnish trio Tapani OH5BM, Pekka OH2TA and Timo OH5LLR. They will set up the radio station in the premises of the Finnish cultural center Villa Karo, in Grand Popo village on the Atlantic coast of Benin.

TY5AF will be active on all HF bands and modes except the last weekend of November, when they will focus on CW to join the CQWW Contest as a multi-operator team. In addition to radio operations, the team will study possibilities to establish local amateur radio activities in Benin together with Villa Karo organisation.

[RAPPEL ANTICIPÉ] L’équipe progresse dans les préparatifs comme prévu. Les antennes sont Spiderbeam avec des poteaux de 12 mètres pour les bandes de 20/17/15/12/10 mètres, ZS6BKW pour les bandes de 160 à 10 mètres et pour les bandes basses, ils construiront différentes antennes filaires sur place. Les radios sont FTdx10, FTdx3000 et KX2 avec des amplis SPE et RMA.

L’équipe TY5AF arrivera dans la zone le lundi 21 novembre vers midi, et tentera de se mettre en ondes le soir même. Les amis du centre Villa Karo ont beaucoup aidé aux préparatifs locaux. Le week-end (26/27 novembre), ils participeront au concours CQWW CW très probablement dans la catégorie multi-single. Retour de l’équipe en Finlande le mardi 29 novembre en fin d’après-midi.

Tous les QSO seront téléchargés sur le LoTW peu après le voyage. La politique QSL détaillée est disponible sur la page TY5AF, qui sera publiée dans quelques jours.

En plus des opérations radio, l’équipe rencontrera les autorités locales et les organisations et individus intéressés pour discuter des initiatives potentielles de radio amateur au Bénin.

[31 AOÛT] TY5AF sera diffusé du 22 au 29 novembre 2022 par le trio finlandais Tapani OH5BM, Pekka OH2TA et Timo OH5LLR . Ils installeront la radio dans les locaux du centre culturel finlandais Villa Karo, dans le village de Grand Popo sur la côte atlantique du Bénin.

TY5AF sera actif sur toutes les bandes et modes HF sauf le dernier week-end de novembre, lorsqu’il se concentrera sur CW pour rejoindre le concours CQWW en tant qu’équipe multi-opérateurs. En plus des opérations radio, l’équipe étudiera les possibilités d’établir des activités locales de radio amateur au Bénin avec l’organisation Villa Karo.

W.A.P. Worldwide Antarctic Program

WAP AAW one of the most important events that connect radio amateurs and Antarctica,  has reached its twentieth edition.

After the joint venture with the Hams of  Russian Robinson Club (RRC) in the celebrations of the 200th anniversary of the discovery of Antarctica, WAP proposes a new friendship adventure, undertaking jointly in honor of the Italian Air Force (IAF), recognizing it the invaluable support  in the scientific missions in Antarctica. The main purpose of the A.A.W. is to increase worldwide interest around Antarctic Continent and its related  matters,  with the aim of staying close to the researchers and personnel  who are spending their time away from home and families,  studying the Antarctic life and its secrets.

Additional purpose,  is  to share what  Nations and Organizations are doing to protect this still non contaminated corner of the world, to share WW a message of peace .

Today’s invitation, is addressed  to all Radio Amateurs (OMs & SWLs) around the World, to the Clubs and Organizations as well as other important groups and  individual operators who would like to join and share with us, this initiative.

AAW is the only event in the world where radio amateurs come together to celebrate  and improve knowledge of the Icy Continent and though it,  spread on the air a message of PEACE. 
Registration to the 20^th Antarctic Activity Week have been opened. Don’t hesitate, book in now and join  with a special Callsign in this 20^th AAW’s  event which will last from  19 through 26 February 2023.

L’objectif principal de l’A.A.W. est d’accroître l’intérêt mondial autour du continent antarctique et de ses questions connexes, dans le but de rester proche des chercheurs et du personnel qui passent leur temps loin de chez eux et de leurs familles, étudier le La vie en Antarctique et ses secrets.
