Volker Strecke DL8JDX is touring around Antarctica on board of a cruise Ship. Yesterday  Volker  sends WAP a couple of pictures; one of this is the Refuge Armada Argentina, also  known as Groussac Refuge (WAP ARG-18) on Petermann island, a small, low and rounded island, lying off the northwest coast of Kyiv in Graham Land, Antarctica, a short distance south of Booth Island and the Lemaire Channel. It is a popular tourist destination.

Opened on February 6, 1955, Grussac Naval refuge  (65° 10’ 33” South, 64° 08’ 10” West), on Petermann Island,  was originally named to Hipólito Bouchard.,  It takes its current name in homage to Paul Groussac (1848-1929), a  French writer and historian based in Argentina and author of an allegation about the Argentine sovereignty of the Falkland Islands. Close to this  Argentine naval refuge ( an old corrugated iron shack in rusted colors), lays a simple cross monument, an unreadable metal plaque  with  just one word “John” recalls the dead of a man of the British Antarctic Survey, who tried to get here over the sea ice in 1982..

On Peterman Island,  there  is a cairn  (the original one is in Paris at Museum National d’Histoire Naturelle) erected on the hill in 1909. The cairn, with a replica plaque, has been designated a Historical site or Monument (HSM 27), following a proposal by Argentina, France and the United Kingdom.

[NEWS UPDATE @ 1945Z] – Here’s the latest via Media Officer, N2AJ:

I had a very nice Satellite Radio call with 3Y0J Team Co-Leader Ken at 17:00 UTC today. First and foremost we always discuss the condition of the team members. Ken said they are all doing very well now. Some are no longer using the seasickness medications. Conditions at sea are now 30 knot winds with 2-3 meter waves. Ken said their location at that time was approximately 400 nautical miles from Bouvet Island. Their speed was about 8 knots. Ken estimates Marama should arrive at Bouvet on Monday evening just before sunset. He says he anticipates a good weather window for at least two days then. The team will attempt to move the equipment and supplies onto the island using the zodiac then. They have two zodiacs. They are hoping to accomplish it in those two days.

For those of you who noticed that our Garmin GPS stopped tracking halfway through Day 9 at 11:57 PM, and also indicated Low Batt, we certainly noticed that too. Adrian charges the Garmin every night so that is not the issue. I downloaded the manual and texted sections that might apply like doing a soft reset, or if there was a low power mode it may have switched to. None of that helped. So it could be an anomaly of being in the most remote place on Earth. Not everything is going to work there. You will see that the Garmin continues to lay down Day marker flags. If you left click them they give you the date, time, latitude and longitude.

I asked Ken how the team is spending their time as they get closer to Bouvet. They are having meetings and making preparations for the landing operation. They are also enjoying working many if you on the radio. This keeps them from being bored, gives them some practice to keep them sharp, and give you an opportunity to see how the propagation is from that part of the world to your stations. Ken had originally told me they had dipoles for just 17m & 20m they would use for maritime mobile operation, but they are using the Elecraft K3’s internal tuner with 100 watts and doing other bands too. I’ve seen spots for them on 10, 12 15, 17, & 20 meters CW & SSB. Ken said there is very low noise on 10 & 12 meters. They are having excellent receive there.

Thank you to everyone who re-tweeted my tweet, or sent their own tweet, to @elonmusk requesting his help in getting Starlink internet coverage for Bouvet Island if we don’t get signal there when the terminal is set up. I haven’t heard from “Mr. Tweet” directly, yet but word has made it to Spacex, the parent company of Starlink, that we may need help. It’s still in the beginning stages at this point. Hopefully I will have more to report to you on this soon.

[JANUARY 28 @ 1625Z] – Using aprs team 3Y0J on Marama showing up well. Seems the Garmin tracker is lagging a little behind, but aprs is ok. Current position at 16:23 GMT is 53°08.05′ S 14°59.16′ W — They are shown on map as “South Atlantic Ocean” and you can see Bouvet in vicinity. Here is the link to aprs.

J’ai eu un très bon appel radio satellite avec le co-leader de l’équipe 3Y0J Ken à 17h00 UTC aujourd’hui. D’abord et avant tout, nous discutons toujours de l’état des membres de l’équipe. Ken a dit qu’ils allaient tous très bien maintenant. Certains n’utilisent plus les médicaments contre le mal de mer. Les conditions en mer sont maintenant des vents de 30 nœuds avec des vagues de 2 à 3 mètres. Ken a déclaré que leur position à ce moment-là était d’environ 400 milles marins de l’île Bouvet. Leur vitesse était d’environ 8 nœuds. Ken estime que Marama devrait arriver à Bouvet lundi soir juste avant le coucher du soleil. Il dit qu’il anticipe une bonne fenêtre météo pendant au moins deux jours ensuite. L’équipe tentera alors de déplacer l’équipement et les fournitures sur l’île en utilisant le zodiac. Ils ont deux zodiaques. Ils espèrent y parvenir pendant ces deux jours.

Pour ceux d’entre vous qui ont remarqué que notre GPS Garmin a cessé de suivre au milieu du jour 9 à 23h57, et a également indiqué Low Batt, nous l’avons certainement remarqué aussi. Adrian charge le Garmin tous les soirs, ce n’est donc pas le problème. J’ai téléchargé le manuel et les sections textuelles qui pourraient s’appliquer comme faire une réinitialisation logicielle, ou s’il y avait un mode basse consommation, il a peut-être basculé. Rien de tout cela n’a aidé. Il pourrait donc s’agir d’une anomalie d’être dans l’endroit le plus reculé de la Terre. Tout ne fonctionnera pas là-bas. Vous verrez que le Garmin continue de poser des drapeaux de marqueur de jour. Si vous faites un clic gauche dessus, ils vous donneront la date, l’heure, la latitude et la longitude.

J’ai demandé à Ken comment l’équipe passait son temps à mesure qu’elle se rapprochait de Bouvet. Ils ont des réunions et préparent l’opération de débarquement. Ils aiment aussi travailler beaucoup si vous êtes à la radio. Cela les empêche de s’ennuyer, leur donne un peu de pratique pour les garder affûtés et vous donne l’occasion de voir comment se propage la propagation de cette partie du monde à vos stations. Ken m’avait initialement dit qu’ils avaient des dipôles pour seulement 17 m et 20 m qu’ils utiliseraient pour les opérations mobiles maritimes, mais ils utilisent le tuner interne de l’Elecraft K3 avec 100 watts et font également d’autres bandes. J’ai vu des spots pour eux sur 10, 12 15, 17 et 20 mètres CW & SSB. Ken a dit qu’il y a très peu de bruit sur 10 et 12 mètres. Ils y ont un excellent accueil.

Merci à tous ceux qui ont retweeté mon tweet, ou envoyé leur propre tweet, à
elonmusk demandant son aide pour obtenir une couverture Internet Starlink pour l’île Bouvet si nous ne le faisons pas t recevoir un signal lorsque le terminal est configuré. Je n’ai pas entendu parler de ‘M. Tweetez directement, mais on a appris à Spacex, la société mère de Starlink, que nous pourrions avoir besoin d’aide. Il n’en est qu’à ses débuts à ce stade. J’espère que j’aurai bientôt plus à vous dire à ce sujet.

[NEWS UPDATE by Yuris, 7P8WW] – Yesterday reached the planned QTH in the mountains. Nice house surrounded by fantastic nature! Last part of the road was quite extreme which came unexpected. It took 5 hours to drive 46 km. Road was full of stones and washouts in some places. It would be OK for 4×4 car, but not for VW Polo which I have.

Yesterday set-up DX-commander vertical, today – low band vertical and BOG for receive. Did the first QSOs on 15m FT8 today. Nothing heard yet on 160m in the evening, despite ongoing CQ WW 160m contest with plenty of strong stations in Europe. May be will try again later.

40 kW power generator of the hotel is powered on 3 hours in the mornings and evenings. I have separate 2 kW generator, which shuts down time to time.

[NOUVELLES MISE À JOUR par Yuris, 7P8WW] – Hier, nous avons atteint le QTH prévu dans les montagnes. Belle maison entourée d’une nature fantastique! La dernière partie de la route était assez extrême, ce qui était inattendu. Il a fallu 5 heures pour parcourir 46 km. La route était pleine de pierres et de ravinements à certains endroits. Ce serait OK pour une voiture 4 × 4, mais pas pour la VW Polo que j’ai.

Hier configuration DX-commander verticale, aujourd’hui – bande basse verticale et BOG pour la réception. A fait les premiers QSO sur 15m FT8 aujourd’hui. Rien encore entendu sur 160m dans la soirée, malgré le concours CQ WW 160m en cours avec de nombreuses stations fortes en Europe. Peut-être réessayera-t-il plus tard.

Le groupe électrogène de 40 kW de l’hôtel est alimenté pendant 3 heures le matin et le soir. J’ai un générateur séparé de 2 kW, qui s’arrête de temps en temps.
