Following on from yesterday’s info about very limited activity from Bouvet by 3Y7GIA & 3Y7THA, now we can report that 3Y/LB5GI & 3Y/LB1QI may also QRV from there. Co-leader Ken LA7GIA says:

This will be the first ever transmission from Bouvet by a LB licensed Norwegian – so very exclusive/rare!!

Let’s wait and see. The 3Y0J pilot stations will let us all know if any of these callsigns will hit the airwaves, and if they do it’s likely they will make only a few QSOs at the end of the 3Y0J DXpedition.

To celebrate the 30^th Anniversary of  Russian Robinson Club (RRC) a Special callsign RI3ØANT will operate from Vostok Base (WAP RUS-13) from January 1 to March 31, 2023.

Although 3Y0J is by far the main Bouvet Island DXpedition, recently 3Y7GIA & 3Y7THA callsigns were added to the QRZ.com database. On mentioning this info on social media, a reply from Ken LA7GIA soon cleared up any questions people may have had:

3Y7GIA and 3Y7THA will be active from Bouvet for a VERY limited number of QSOs. By default the Norwegians have a license to Bouvet, Peter 1, Jan Mayen and Svalbard, we don’t need to apply for it , it is in the regulation. E.g I have used JW7GIA several times, and also JX7GIA. We will give more info to our pilots when 3Y7GIA and 3Y7THA will be transmitting. QSL via homecalls.

So there you have it – straight from the keyboard of the co-leader.

PS: 3Y/LB5GI & 3Y0/LB1QI also recently added to the QRZ database.

Preparations for the expedition are proceeding as planned. At the end of the year, after several months, we managed to obtain all import permits for amateur radio equipment and therefore the antennas will be shipped in advance in mid-January by air freight to Bujumbura.

W.A.P. Worldwide Antarctic Program

New Zealand Sub-Antarctic Islands consist of five island groups: Snares, Bounty Islands, Antipodes Islands, Auckland Islands and Campbell Island,  in the Southern Ocean south-east of New Zealand. The islands, lying between the Antarctic and Subtropical Convergences and the seas, have a high level of productivity, biodiversity, wildlife population densities and endemism among birds, plants and invertebrates.

According to the recent “new wording”  of the islands involved,  which are now known as “New Zealand Sub-Antarctic Islands”  versus the previous diction of  “New Zealand Outlying islands” WAP have already add  on Section 2 of the WAP-WADA Directory , few of them with their related references. As soon as new evidences of other Ham radio activities from different sites on the islands, they will be insert on WAP Directories.

The Castaway Depot built by the New Zealand government in the 1880s, is now maintained as an historic site by the Department of Conservation. (picture on the Right, show the old Depot)

The dining tent used in 1947 was sited where the current research hut is located. The corrugated iron structure  and the wood one is the same building.

[UPCOMING] Also a reminder, and to avoid confusion, although VK9/M is usually reserved for Mellish Reef activities, operator Marcelo was assigned this callsign by the ACMA regulator. 

[OCTOBER 23] Marcelo, ZL1MTO has announced he will be active from Norfolk Island as VK9MTO during December 29, 2022 to January 5, 2023. QRV on 20 & 10m; SSB & FT8/FT4 using IC-718 and half-wave dipole. QSL via H/c.

[UPDATE] – Antonello confirms there is a DXpedition in the works. Preparations are still ongoing and sponsorship is sought, then full detailed info will follow.

[PREVIOUSLY] Antonelllo, IK2DUW (QSL manager for well known DX traveller, Elvira IV3FSG (ex-5X3R, C92R, 5R8LH+ many others) recently added the callsign 9U5R to the QRZ.com database. While details are still scarce (we’ve asked Antonello for more info), it appears a DXpedition to Bujumbura, Burundi is in the offing for 2023. QRX for more.

[Mise à Jour] – Antonello confirme qu’une DXpedition est en préparation. Les préparatifs sont toujours en cours et un parrainage est recherché, puis des informations détaillées complètes suivront.

NEWS UPDATE – FT8WW started CW operations shortly before 1830z on 30CW. Listen to a recording here. Meanwhile, first log upload has been completed – check here. 

DECEMBER 25 @ 1100z (courtesy official website).

FT8WW’s first QSO on 30m, in FT8 of course! It wasn’t on CW. The resulting tsunami with over 500 QSOs in 4 hours!

So I started, I only have one antenna, the wind forbidding me for the moment to erect the second for frequencies above 18 MHz.

But as I don’t want to change bands too much, I’m going to stay on 10 MHz and maybe 14 MHz depending on the openings. I’d rather do CW or SSB, but the spread decided otherwise (you saw yourself tonight). FT8 is in MSHV, I have 250W and 3 queues.

It’s windy, foggy and very humid.
