Two Chinese icebreaker research vessels and a cargo ship set sail last November  1^st for the Antarctic with more than 460 personnel on board to help complete construction of China’s fifth Research Station on the world’s southernmost continent, which could be finished next year.

China’s biggest flotilla of research vessels deployed to the Antarctic will focus on building the station on the rocky, windswept Inexpressible Island near the Ross Sea, a deep Southern Ocean bay named after a 19th century British explorer.

Work on the first Chinese station in the Pacific sector, began in 2018. It will be used to conduct research on the region’s environment, state television reported.

The two icebreakers, Xuelong 1 and Xuelong 2, the name means “Snow Dragon” in Chinese, set sail from Shanghai with mostly personnel and logistics supplies on board.

The cargo ship “Tianhui”, or “Divine Blessings”( TIAN HUI, General Cargo Ship – Details and current position – IMO 9774599 – VesselFinder) , taking construction material for the station, set off from the eastern port of Zhangjiagang.

The five-month mission will include a survey on the impact of climate change.

The two icebreakers will also conduct environmental surveys in the Prydez Bay, the Astronaut Sea in southeast Antarctic, and in the Ross Sea and Amundsen Sea in the west.

This China’s mission  to the Antarctic, will also cooperate with countries including the United States, Britain, and Russia on logistics supply, state media said.

Deux navires de recherche brise-glace chinois et un cargo ont appareillé le 1er novembre dernier^st pour l’Antarctique avec plus de 460 personnes à bord pour aider à terminer
construction de la cinquième station de recherche chinoise sur le continent le plus au sud du monde, qui pourrait être achevée l’année prochaine.

La plus grande flottille de navires de recherche de Chine déployée en Antarctique se concentrera sur la construction de la station sur l’île rocheuse et balayée par les vents de l’île Inexprimable, près de la mer de Ross, une baie profonde de l’océan Austral nommée d’après un explorateur britannique du XIXe siècle. .

Les travaux sur la première station chinoise dans le secteur Pacifique ont débuté en 2018. Elle sera utilisée pour mener des recherches sur l’environnement de la région, a rapporté la télévision d’État.

Les deux brise-glace, Xuelong 1 et Xuelong 2, dont le nom signifie « Dragon des neiges » en chinois, ont appareillé de Shanghai avec principalement personnel et fournitures logistiques à bord.

Le cargo « Tianhui », ou « Bénédictions divines » ( TIAN HUI, cargo général – Détails et position actuelle – OMI 9774599 – VesselFinder), prenant des matériaux de construction pour la station, est parti du port oriental de Zhangjiagang.

La mission de cinq mois comprendra une enquête sur l’impact du changement climatique.

Les deux brise-glaces mèneront également des études environnementales dans la baie de Prydez, la mer des Astronautes au sud-est de l’Antarctique, ainsi que dans la mer de Ross et la mer d’Amundsen à l’ouest.

Cette mission chinoise en Antarctique coopérera également avec des pays tels que les États-Unis, la Grande-Bretagne et la Russie en matière d’approvisionnement logistique, ont indiqué les médias d’État.

Take, JI3DST will be active from the Miyako Islands, AS-079, until the 19 December. He will be operating SSB, CW and FT8 using a variety of callsigns including JS6RRR. QSL via Club Log and Logbook of the World.

Don Conlee WX5DC is a professor at A&M Atmospheric Sciences in Texas.

Don, along with class members,   is actually on board of  M/V Ocean Victory sailing  to the South Shetland Islands/Antarctica .

He has sent us  a message  and some pics:  -We finally got everything together and had a few FT8 contacts on 20m last night!   We were using WX4/WX5DC.  I hope that we will be able to try SSB tonight between 00Z and 03Z, ~14.243.   The student on the attached pic  is Katherine Forson KT5KMF.  
We may operate briefly before dinner and hopefully for the sweet spot of  0-3Z.    Winds have died down and snow stopped, so fingers crossed-. 

We’ll keep our ears open … hopefully we can catch  Don someway!

J’espère que nous pourrons essayer la SSB ce soir entre 00Z et 03Z, ~14.243. L’élève sur la photo ci-jointe est Katherine Forson KT5KMF.
We may opèrez brièvement avant le dîner et, espérons-le, jusqu’au point idéal de 0-3Z.    Les vents se sont calmés et la neige s’est arrêtée, alors croisons les doigts.
