NEWS UPDATE by CDXP

Today we received passports back from France with visas for 15 days to enter the Congo. The preparation for obtaining the documents took almost 12 months. We missed the initially scheduled September 2022, and the tickets had to book for January 2023. Fortunately, in October, the Ministry of Health of the Republic of the Congo cancelled the obligation to test for covid with an RT-PCR test before leaving the country, after arriving in the country and before flying home from the Congo. Thus, after long months of preparations, all the legislative requirements for the start of the expedition were finally met.

We managed to secure the QTH in the flat terrain within sight of the ocean. We will have an area of approx. 6000m2 at our disposal, which is fenced, so we should feel safe. The view in all directions is unobstructed so we can point our antennas without problems to all continents. There is also enough space around for installing beverage antennas; the only complication can be grazing herds of cows.

QTH is not connected to public electricity. A diesel generator must power the entire QTH on a 24/7 basis. We have managed to secure two diesel generators that regularly alternate in operation, so we can expect minor outages needed to switch the entire local network to the second generator. In addition to the expedition’s equipment, the entire house, including all its electrical appliances, is powered from the generator. Estimated consumption is approximately 4 l per hour, which is about 1400 l of diesel in a 14-day operation. The price of one liter of diesel is roughly +0.8USD per liter plus delivery costs to the QTH.

Based on the comments, we have modified the planned frequency table, which we will try to respect as much as possible.

Currently, the finalization of the material list and the packing and weighing of individual items are underway. We bought extra checked baggage to take more antennas with us. In total, we will carry 17 pieces of checked baggage of 23 kg and eight pieces of cabin baggage of 12 kg. That’s a total of 487 kilograms of material.

To make the operation of the TN8K expedition more attractive, we decided to announce a competition for the official expedition T-Shirt. The first station with the most slots with TN8K on Clublog will receive a free official expedition T-shirt from us as a thank-you. We will evaluate stations from EU, NA+SA, Asia and VK/ZL+Oceania. So there are four pieces of official TN8K T-shirts in the game. Only the first station from a given area with the maximum number of slots can win. It is not only the number of places that matters but also the speed of who reaches this number first.

MISE À JOUR DES NOUVELLES par CDXP

Aujourd’hui, nous avons reçu des passeports de France avec des visas de 15 jours pour entrer au Congo. La préparation pour l’obtention des documents a pris près de 12 mois. Nous avons raté le septembre 2022 initialement prévu, et les billets devaient réserver pour janvier 2023. Heureusement, en octobre, le ministère de la Santé de la République du Congo a annulé l’obligation de tester le covid avec un test RT-PCR avant de quitter le pays. , après son arrivée dans le pays et avant son vol de retour du Congo. Ainsi, après de longs mois de préparatifs, toutes les exigences législatives pour le début de l’expédition ont finalement été remplies.

Nous avons réussi à sécuriser le QTH sur le terrain plat en vue de l’océan. Nous aurons une superficie d’env. 6000m2 à notre disposition, qui est clôturé, donc nous devrions nous sentir en sécurité. La vue dans toutes les directions est dégagée, nous pouvons donc pointer nos antennes sans problème sur tous les continents. Il y a également suffisamment d’espace autour pour installer des antennes de boissons ; la seule complication peut être le pâturage des troupeaux de vaches.

QTH n’est pas connecté à l’électricité publique. Un générateur diesel doit alimenter l’ensemble du QTH 24h/24 et 7j/7. Nous avons réussi à sécuriser deux générateurs diesel qui fonctionnent régulièrement en alternance, nous pouvons donc nous attendre à des pannes mineures nécessaires pour basculer l’ensemble du réseau local vers le deuxième générateur. En plus de l’équipement de l’expédition, toute la maison, y compris tous ses appareils électriques, est alimentée par le groupe électrogène. La consommation estimée est d’environ 4 l par heure, soit environ 1400 l de diesel en 14 jours de fonctionnement. Le prix d’un litre de diesel est d’environ +0,8 USD par litre plus les frais de livraison au QTH.

Sur la base des commentaires, nous avons modifié le tableau des fréquences prévues, que nous essaierons de respecter au maximum.

Actuellement, la finalisation de la liste des matériaux et l’emballage et le pesage des articles individuels sont en cours. Nous avons acheté des bagages enregistrés supplémentaires pour emporter plus d’antennes avec nous. Au total, nous transporterons 17 bagages enregistrés de 23 kg et huit bagages de cabine de 12 kg. Cela représente un total de 487 kg de matériaux.

Pour rendre le fonctionnement de l’expédition TN8K plus attrayant, nous avons décidé d’annoncer un concours pour le T-shirt officiel de l’expédition. La première station avec le plus de créneaux avec TN8K sur Clublog recevra un T-shirt officiel d’expédition gratuit de notre part en guise de remerciement. Nous évaluerons les stations de l’UE, NA+SA, Asie et VK/ZL+Océanie. Il y a donc quatre pièces de t-shirts officiels TN8K dans le jeu. Seule la première station d’une zone donnée avec le nombre maximum d’emplacements peut gagner. Ce n’est pas seulement le nombre de places qui compte, mais aussi la vitesse à laquelle atteint ce nombre en premier.

[NEWS UPDATE] Since the initial info regarding D2UY activity (below), Mikalai has been active from Angola on and off for over a year. He was recently on vacation (mid-October to early December) but is again QRV. He now has an antenna for 80m which he hopes to use soon. Look for him on CW and now FT8, too.

[SEPTEMBER 13, 2021] Mikalai, UT6UY, is now active from Cabinda, Angola as D2UY and lasting for several months. He uses a Yaesu FTDX-10 and a vertical antenna. QRV usually from 16.00 to 23.00 UTC on 20-15-10m, CW only because of very strong local QRM on low bands. QSL route will be known later. Fore more information contact Toly, UT3UY.

[NEWS UPDATE] – Today the journey to Crozet begins for Thierry ! Here he is at Bordeaux airport earlier this morning (local) getting ready to board his flight to Paris, then onto Reunion. The adventure has finally started !

NOVEMBER 20 by F6CUK 

Here is the latest information to date, following the signing of the agreement with the TAAF

• 12 December: loading of freight, boarding of passengers (early afternoon) on the Marion Dufresne and departure for Tromelin at the end of the day.
• December 16: return to near Reunion, helicopter transport of agents returning from Tromelin and departure for Crozet. I will not descend on Tromelin.
• December 20: Expected arrival in Crozet. Start of the emission window.
• January 26: End of the emission window. I am authorized to broadcast HF for 3 weeks only between December 20 and January 26. In addition, every day at least 5 hours will be neutralized (no emission) to allow the Poles Institute (IPEV) to make a measurement.
• No constraint for QO-100 traffic, possibility of traffic during the whole stay on the base.
• Departure from Crozet around March 25th.
• Passage to Kerguelen then Amsterdam for supplying the bases. I will not be allowed to get off the boat so no emissions.
• Return to France in May.

As you can read above, these are unfortunately significant modifications in particular for the HF part and far from the initial authorization given.

Callsign and frequencies

Only the information given on the Crozet2022 site, by F6EXV, F8TRT and of course Les Nouvelles DX is reliable. The others (FT1W, etc.) are fanciful. Don’t waste your time or your money. Given the very short duration of my broadcasts, I intend to favor traffic on 2 or 3 bands maximum for ATNOs. Depending on the best band for the W6 I will choose 14 or 18 MHz and 10 MHz at night. I did not choose frequencies either, it will be seen with the scientists on site, except for the 10 Mhz FT8 where with the Bouvet team, we agreed that I would use 10.131 Mhz but I noted the subs bands of US (novice) stations on 14 MHz. The whole team is working to have the largest possible transmission window, which would allow more traffic and perhaps more bandwidth. I am in contact with the IPEV, but to date I have no information going in the direction of an extension.

I am sorry for all those, and I know there are many, who are looking for Crozet. For me too it is a great frustration to stay 3 months on site for only 3 weeks of HF traffic.

NOVEMBER 17 

The callsign “FT1W” recently appeared on the QRZ.com database. The page initially displayed the official logo of this upcoming DXpedition. However, if you read the info below – posted on the official Crozet FT/W blog – then this callsign is not quite what it’s supposed to be. FT1W probably comes from FT/W as per the header image. Seems an eager individual was keen to add it to the database, then causing some confusion.

NOTE: The callsign is not issued yet, and I have requested a special call to commemorate the 60 years of the first transmissions made by Mr. Baudelot, first ham operator on the island in the years 61/62. The callsign will be released only hours before the start of the activity by Paul F6EXV and Jean-Michel F6AJA, i.e. after my arrival on the island. Paul will inform via internet and Twitter, Jean-Michel on his DX bulletin. This will be so to avoid pirate activities. Anything not coming from Paul or Jean-Michel will be mere speculation. Be cautious of the FT4Wxxx that might show up !

[CROZET 2022/23 BLOG]

[NEWS UPDATE] – Aujourd’hui le voyage à Crozet commence pour Thierry ! Le voici à l’aéroport de Bordeaux plus tôt ce matin (local) s’apprêtant à embarquer sur son vol pour Paris, puis pour La Réunion. L’aventure a enfin commencé !

20 NOVEMBRE par F6CUK 

Voici les dernières informations en date, suite à la signature de l’accord avec les TAAF

• 12 décembre : chargement du fret, embarquement des passagers (début d’après-midi) sur le Marion Dufresne et départ pour Tromelin en fin de journée.
• 16 décembre : retour près de La Réunion, transport par hélicoptère des agents revenant de Tromelin et départ pour Crozet. Je ne descendrai pas sur Tromelin.
• 20 décembre : Arrivée prévue à Crozet. Début de la fenêtre d’émission.
• 26 janvier : Fin de la fenêtre d’émission. Je suis autorisé à émettre en HF pendant 3 semaines uniquement entre le 20 décembre et le 26 janvier. De plus, tous les jours à moins 5 heures seront neutralisées (aucune émission) pour permettre à l’Institut des Pôles (IPEV) d’effectuer une mesure.
• Aucune contrainte de trafic QO-100, possibilité de trafic pendant tout le séjour sur la base.
• Départ de Crozet vers le 25 mars.
• Passage à Kerguelen puis Amsterdam pour l’approvisionnement des bases. Je ne serai pas autorisé à descendre du bateau donc pas d’émissions.
• Retour en France en mai.

Comme vous pouvez le lire ci-dessus, ce sont malheureusement des modifications importantes notamment pour la partie HF et loin de l’autorisation initiale donnée.

Indicatif et fréquences

Seules les informations données sur le site Crozet2022, par F6EXV, F8TRT et bien sûr Les Nouvelles DX sont fiables. Les autres (FT1W, etc.) sont fantaisistes. Ne perdez ni votre temps ni votre argent. Compte tenu de la très courte durée de mes diffusions, je compte privilégier le trafic sur 2 ou 3 bandes maximum pour les ATNO. En fonction de la meilleure bande pour le W6 je choisirai 14 ou 18 MHz et 10 MHz la nuit. Je n’ai pas non plus choisi les fréquences, ça se verra avec les scientifiques sur place, sauf pour le 10 Mhz FT8 où avec l’équipe Bouvet, on s’est mis d’accord que je ferais utilisez 10,131 Mhz mais j’ai noté les sous-bandes des stations américaines (novices) sur 14 MHz. Toute l’équipe travaille pour avoir la plus grande fenêtre de transmission possible, ce qui permettrait plus de trafic et peut-être plus de bande passante. Je suis en contact avec l’IPEV, mais à ce jour je n’ai aucune information allant dans le sens d’une extension.

Je suis désolé pour tous ceux, et je sais qu’il y en a beaucoup, qui recherchent Crozet. Pour moi aussi c’est une grande frustration de rester 3 mois sur site pour seulement 3 semaines de trafic HF.

L’indicatif ‘FT1W‘ est récemment apparu sur le QRZ.com base de données. La page affichait initialement le logo officiel de cette prochaine DXpedition. Cependant, si vous lisez les informations ci-dessous – publiées sur le site officiel de Crozet FT/W blog – alors cet indicatif n’est pas tout à fait ce qu’il est censé être. FT1W vient probablement de FT/W selon l’image d’en-tête. Il semble qu’un individu désireux ait voulu l’ajouter à la base de données, provoquant alors une certaine confusion.

REMARQUE : L’indicatif n’est pas encore émis, et j’ai demandé un appel spécial pour commémorer les 60 ans des premières transmissions faites par M. Baudelot, premier radioamateur de l’île dans les années 61/62. L’indicatif ne sera publié que quelques heures avant le début de l’activité par Paul F6EXV et Jean-Michel F6AJA, c’est-à-dire après mon arrivée sur l’île. Paul informera via internet et Twitter, Jean-Michel sur son bulletin DX. Ce sera ainsi pour éviter les activités de pirates. Tout ce qui ne vient pas de Paul ou Jean-Michel ne sera que pure spéculation. Méfiez-vous des FT4Wxxx qui pourraient apparaître !

DXpedition leader, WA4DAN, and the CYØS team now confirm the dates of their upcoming DXpedition to Sable Island DXpedition… March 20-29, 2023.

Sable Island is ranked #50 on the DXCC “most wanted” list and needed by many DXers for filling in “band slots”! We are planning four stations to be QRV 24/7 during our stay on the island.

Each station will use ICOM radio transceivers and 500-watt amplifiers. Modes will be CW, SSB, Digital and EME.

The CYØS team has monoband Yagis for 20, 15 and 10m and a duo-band Cushcraft A3WS Yagi for 12 and 17m. The Team will erect dedicated verticals for 160, 80, 40 and 30m and are planning to lay out 4,000 ft. of radials.

We have chartered a BN-2a Britten Norman Islander from Sable Aviation and a Helicopter from Vision Air Services to facilitate transporting equipment, antennas, eight operators, food and personal gear including warm clothing.

Flights to Sable are often delayed due to poor weather or unfavorable beach conditions. But we have successfully negotiated overnight stays and a 2-3 day extension on our permit.

We are extremely limited in the total weight allowed by both our transportation charters to only 3,000 pounds. This is due to weight and balance considerations. And both charter companies have promised a yet-undetermined rate increase due to higher fuel costs. This is in addition to other expense challenges. The current budget is $75,000 and is likely to go higher.

We have always subscribed to the DXpedition funding model used by DX Expeditions, Inc. The Team will put up 50% of the total costs and the DX community will be asked to fund the other 50%. In that regard, we are very pleased to announce that an anonymous “well-known DXer and DXpeditioner,” has offered to match any donations between now and the beginning of the operation.

This is obviously huge and very generous!

Les vols à destination de Sable sont souvent retardés en raison du mauvais temps ou des conditions de plage défavorables. Mais nous avons réussi à négocier des nuitées et une prolongation de 2-3 jours sur notre permis.

Nous sommes extrêmement limités dans le poids total autorisé par nos deux chartes de transport à seulement 3 000 livres. Cela est dû à des considérations de poids et d’équilibre. Et les deux sociétés de charter ont promis une augmentation des tarifs encore indéterminée en raison de la hausse des coûts du carburant. Cela s’ajoute à d’autres problèmes de dépenses. Le budget actuel est de 75 000 USD et devrait augmenter.

Nous avons toujours souscrit au modèle de financement DXpedition utilisé par DX Expeditions, Inc.
